How do the Specie Split calculations work?

What does this feature do?

The Specie Split feature is used to split the weight and number of fish of a Mixed Salmon ticket line item (460) into one or more supported Salmon species: Chum (450), King (410), Coho (430), Pink (440) and the remainder (if any) being distributed to Reds (420).

From Fisherman Accounting > Fish Tickets > Mass Update (Specie Split group):

You’ll see four percentage fields:

1. Chum %

2. Coho %

3. King %

4. Pink %

Red is not keyed directly; it is calculated as the remainder, if any.

How do the percentages work?

• You can key values in any or all of the four fields.

• The sum of all four values must be ≤ 100%.

• If the sum is < 100%, the remainder is automatically assigned to Red.

• If the sum is exactly 100%, no Red line is created for that Mixed Fish weight.

• If all four fields are left blank, no split occurs.

• If any field is non-blank (even “0”), split processing will occur, and any remainder goes to Red.

What values are allowed in the percentage fields?

• Allowed:

  • Numbers with or without decimals:

    • 15 → 15%

    • 22.3 → 22.3%

    • 100 → 100%

    • 0.5 → 0.5%

    • 0 → 0%

• Not allowed:

  • Negative numbers

  • Alphabetic/character values

• Percentages are keyed as numbers only (do not type “%”).

There is also validation to stop:

• Non‑numeric (“alpha”) values, and

• Percent entries longer than 13 characters

What happens if I leave a species field blank?

• A blank field is treated as no percentage entered for that species.

• For split processing:

  • If a species field is blank, it is treated as 0% and no line is created for that species.

  • If all four species values are omitted, split processing does not run.

  • If any field is non-blank (including “0”), split processing does run for that field and any remainder goes to Red.

How is the actual weight calculated?

The total weight of the Mixed Fish item is multiplied by each species’ percentage:

• Species weight = Mixed Fish weight × (Species % / 100)

The system guarantees that:

• The sum of all split line weights equals the original Mixed Fish weight.

• If rounding is needed to keep totals aligned:

  • The system will round down the species with the greatest weight.

How is the Number of Fish calculated?

• Number of Fish is calculated separately using the same entered percentage.

• The result is rounded to a whole fish.

• Partial fish are not created.

• The system applies minimum-count handling when a species has calculated weight but its fish count would otherwise round to zero.

• Red receives the remaining Number of Fish after the other species counts are calculated.

How is Red weight and Number of Fish determined?

Red is calculated as the remainder after the entered Chum, King, Coho, and Pink percentages have been applied.

For weight:

1. Add the Chum %, King %, Coho %, and Pink % together. This is the total entered percentage.

2. If the total entered percentage is less than 100%, the remaining percentage is assigned to Red.

3. Red weight is the original Mixed Fish weight minus the calculated Chum, King, Coho, and Pink weights.

Red weight = Mixed Fish weight − total calculated weight for the other species

For Number of Fish:

1. The system calculates and rounds the Number of Fish for each entered species.

2. Red receives the remaining Number of Fish after the calculated Chum, King, Coho, and Pink fish counts are subtracted from the original Mixed Fish count.

Red Number of Fish = Mixed Fish Number of Fish − total calculated Number of Fish for the other species

Calculating Red as the remainder ensures that the total weight and Number of Fish across all split lines reconcile to the original Mixed Fish line.

If the entered species percentages total exactly 100%, a Red line is normally not created. However, rounding and minimum-fish-count rules may affect the individual Number of Fish values assigned to the split species.

Can I “re-chum” or re-split a ticket?

Yes. “Re-chumming” (re‑running the split) is supported:

• The system continues to track which line items came from a Mixed Fish item.

• You can change the species percentages completely on re‑split.

• There is no requirement to stick to the original species combination.

• This can be done for Posted tickets by using the Void/Correct feature to Correct the ticket and then run the Specie Split.

Example:

• Split #1: 75% Chum, 25% Red (King & Coho left blank/0).

• Split #2: 30% Chum, 10% King, 60% Coho (sum = 100%; no Red remainder).

Specie Split Examples:

Example 1

• Mixed Fish: 1000 lbs and 100 fish

• Mass Update fields:

  • Chum % = 5

  • Coho% = [blank]

  • King% = 1.5

  • Pink % = [blank]

Results:

• Chum: 1000 × 0.05 = 50 lbs and 5 fish

• King: 1000 × 0.015 = 15 lbs and 2 fish

• Red remainder: 1000 − (50 + 15) = 935 lbs and 93 fish

Example 2

• Mixed Fish: 800 lbs and 100 fish

• Separate King line: 200 lbs and 20 fish (already keyed as King, not part of the split)

• Mass Update fields on the 800‑lb Mixed Fish:

  • Chum % = 3

  • Coho % = 1.5

  • King % = [blank]

  • Pink % = 8

Results for the 800 lbs Mixed Fish:

• Chum: 800 × 0.03 = 24 lbs and 3 fish

• Coho: 800 × 0.015 = 12 lbs and 2 fish (1.5 rounded)

• Pink: 800 × 0.08 = 64 lbs and 8 fish

• Red remainder: 800 − (24 + 12 + 64) = 700 lbs and 87 fish (100- (3+2+8))

Final split results:

The separate King line remains unchanged at 200 lbs and 20 fish because it was not part of the Mixed Fish line being split.
