NS-13916 - Inventory Find Lots: From “Go Get Coffee” to “Oh, It’s Already Loaded”

This release is all about one big win: Find Lot Details now loads significantly faster.

In some situations, customers were seeing the Inventory Find Lots page take around five minutes or more to load lot details, which is less of a page load and more of a patience-based endurance sport. Nobody opens Find Lots hoping to experience a dramatic pause.

We reworked how NorthScope retrieves lot balance information, cleaned up some unnecessary processing, and replaced the older search approach with NorthScope’s newer metadata search functionality. The important part: the page now gets to the data much more directly instead of wandering through the database with a flashlight and a vague sense of purpose.

The result is a major performance improvement for Inventory Find Lots, especially when loading Find Lot Details. Faster searches, faster results, and far less time wondering whether the page is working, frozen, or quietly contemplating its life choices. This was such a major improvement, not only were we compelled to create a release just for this one item but we were moved to compose a poem.

Find Lots: An Ode

Behold, Find Lots, once slow as winter mud,
Where users watched the minutes drift away.
Five minutes passed; the screen sat still as stone,
While patience packed its bag and walked away.

We sent the full-text search to well-earned rest,
And let our metadata steer the quest.
Lot balances now feed the page with speed,
With fewer joins left dragging at the rear.

Find Lot Details now rises without groans,
No long procession through the data bog.
The page now loads before the coffee cools,
A modest wonder wrapped in code and logs.

Less waiting now, less staring into space,
And far less doubt that something broke again.
Find Lots, at last, remembers how to move,
Which seems a thing a search screen ought to do.
